Short answer: If your cold emails get no replies, work through the funnel in order: deliverability, targeting, subject line, message, and follow up. Low replies almost always trace to one of these. Check whether your emails even reach the inbox first, then whether you are emailing the right people, then whether your subject and message earn attention, and finally whether you follow up at all.
Check deliverability first
If your emails land in spam, nothing else matters. Confirm your domain setup, warmup, and list quality, and run an inbox placement test. Fix this before touching your copy.
Then check targeting
- Are you emailing people who have the problem you solve?
- Is the person the right decision maker?
- Is the list focused, or broad and generic?
Then the subject and message
If delivery and targeting are fine, look at your subject line and first line. Are they specific and about the reader? Is the email short, with one clear offer and one easy ask? Weak copy here loses replies even with a good list.
Then follow up
- Are you following up at all?
- Send two to four spaced follow ups.
- Many replies come from these, not the first email.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Where do I start if I get zero replies?
A: Start with deliverability. If you are in spam, fix that before anything else.
Q: How do I know if it is targeting or copy?
A: If opens are low, suspect subject and deliverability. If opens are fine but replies are low, suspect targeting and message.
Q: Could my offer be the problem?
A: Yes. If the offer is not compelling or relevant, even a perfect email will not get replies.
Q: How many emails before I judge results?
A: Enough for a fair sample, not a handful. Small numbers can mislead.
Q: Should I change everything at once?
A: No. Change one thing at a time so you learn what actually moved the needle.
